Healthy Summer Snacking with Apples

Stamford, CT – June 11, 2002

Can an apple a day really keep the doctor away? According to recent research conducted at several universities, both in the U.S. and abroad, the old adage may in fact have some validity.

Some of the new research suggests that the phytonutrients (naturally occurring nutrients in plants) found in apples can reduce the risk of developing asthma. Researchers from London's King's College and the University of Southampton reported that people who ate at least two apples per week had a 22-32 percent lower risk of developing asthma than people who ate fewer apples. It is believed that the apple flavonoids might reduce asthma inflammation through an antioxidant, anti-allergenic or anti-inflammatory response.

According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, more than 17 million Americans currently suffer from asthma, an estimated five million are children.

Products such as Mott's Apple Juice and Apple Sauce are a great way to help your child eat the five servings of fruits and vegetables that are recommended for good health. A six-ounce serving of 100 percent apple juice or a four-ounce serving of apple sauce equals one fruit serving according to the USDA's Food Guide Pyramid. In addition to being delicious, apple juice and apple sauce have always been smart food choices because:

  • Apples have no fat, cholesterol or sodium and are an excellent source of fiber.
  • 100 percent apple juice provides more natural juice than juice "cocktails" or "drinks", which often contain far less than 100 percent juice.
  • 100 percent apple juice contains 25 percent fewer calories than 100 percent white and purple grape juice.
  • Apple sauce is a fat-free substitute for oil when baking cakes, muffins and other moist, cake-like goods. Substitute the same amount of apple sauce as the recipe calls for oil.

Listed below are some great tasting fun and easy to make recipes for your child's summer snacking.
