Mott's "Nutrition Competition" Celebrates National Nutrition Month With Save the Children; Apple Bobbing Competition Looks to Establish World Record
HOW DO YOU LIKE THEM APPLES? …
WESTPORT, CT - March 08, 2002
Doctors in Westport, Conn., can rest easy as the inaugural Mott's Apple Bobbing Contest kicks off National Nutrition Month at the worldwide headquarters of Save the Children. As part of the anticipated "Nutrition Competition," a giant apple trough, filled with nearly 5,000 gallons of water and thousands of red delicious apples, will be the site of a new world record for the largest apple bobbing contest. And, to make sure there is no ‘rotten' play with more than 100 youngsters bobbing for the first-prize Apple® Computer, a uniformed referee will monitor the contest. This unique competition is one of many events planned by Mott's to showcase that nutrition can be fun.
The March 14 "Nutrition Competition," marks the launch of Mott's partnership with Save the Children. Through the partnership, in 2002 Mott's will donate more than $325,000 in cash and products, which will enable Save the Children to enhance its out-of-school-time program with the addition of a vitally needed nutrition component. The Save the Children curriculum: Energy for Living; Balancing Physical Activity and Nutrition Through the Web of Support has been made possible by Mott's.
"We are pleased Mott's is working with Save the Children to encourage and engage both parents and children in learning the fundamentals and essentials of eating properly and making informed choices," said Catherine Milton, executive director of Save the Children U.S. Programs.
"Nutrition is yet another way our proven Web of Support model can help better the lives of children in need."
"This is a great setting, where children will learn about the importance of good nutrition by participating in fun and exciting activities," said Brad Irwin, president, Mott's Inc.
"National Nutrition Month provides us with an excellent opportunity for Mott's to announce its partnership with Save the Children. Together we will work to deliver the message about nutrition to the community. Our goal is to improve physical and mental health of young people by providing educational information and entertaining learning activities."
The apple bobbing competition is designed to teach children proper eating habits through a day of fun and games. Held at the Save the Children Worldwide headquarters, participants will gather to compete in games representing each of the five food groups. In addition to the apple bobbing competition, contestants will vie for top honors in the hot potato, name that fruit/veggie, egg spoon race, whole wheat bagel toss and guess the number of green beans.
Mott's nutrition mission stresses the correlation between eating fruit as a source of nutrition and the benefits of healthy living at all ages. It highlights the importance of eating a variety of foods by outlining each food group and its recommended daily serving. The program particularly emphasizes eating foods rich in vitamins, minerals and fiber, such as fruits, vegetables and grains, in order to strengthen the body and protect against disease.
The curriculum also incorporates the significance of eating foods low in fats, sugars and oil in order to reduce the risk of heart disease and certain cancers. Finally, the importance of exercise as a means of achieving and maintaining healthy living is an integral part of the nutrition mission. The benefits of being physically active include having more energy, thinking more clearly, being more alert, keeping our muscles strong and bones healthy, and helping to maintain a healthy weight. The curriculum is available at www.motts.com.
Although the program focuses on adolescents between the ages of 5 and 18, the nutrition concepts are also valid for adults. Mott's believes that children's eating habits are greatly influenced by adults.
